More and more people are discovering that they are gluten intolerant and that a gluten free diet is required for their well being. Rates of celiac disease have nearly doubled in the last 25 years in western countries. More commonplace is gluten sensitivity, which affects approximately 18 million people in the United States and 9 million in Canada, and is essentially a less severe form of gluten intolerance than that of Celiac disease.
Many celebrities that have been affected by gluten allergies have become great ambassadors for the gluten free lifestyle, sharing their tips and hardships with the world. Some of them are a living proof that switching to a diet that fits your body, can not only improve your wellbeing but can also help you reach the gold. So as to gain some inspiration and for some guilty pleasure, here’s a list of our favourite gluten free celebrities!
1.) Novak Djokovic
First on our list is the Novak Djokovic, the current world number one and one of the world’s greatest tennis players of all time. Djokovic kicked gluten back in 2010 when a fellow Serbian, Dr Igor Cetojevic, diagnosed him with gluten sensitivity. Previously suffering from chest and stomach pains, breathing difficulties and fatigue, Djokovic has said that switching to a gluten free diet worked like magic: “I was lighter, quicker, clearer in mind and spirit … I could tell the moment I woke up each morning that I was different than I had been, maybe since childhood. I sprang out of bed, ready to tear into the day ahead.” In fact going gluten free has led Djokovic to becoming the world No 1 just 12 months later. He also went on to write a book Serve To Win, which reveals how changing his diet has transformed his health and tennis.
2.) Rachel Weisz
The English actress and Oscar winner for her role in The Constant Gardener is next on our list of gluten free celebrities. Weisz went on a gluten free diet in 2006 after discovering she has a an intolerance to wheat. She said it gave her heaps more energy and an overall better state of being.
3.) Zooey Deschanel
This indie star discovered she had celiac disease already in her adult hood. Apart from wheat, Zooey is also allergic to wheat and eggs. Thus when appearing on an episode of Top Chef Masters, Zooey wasn’t the easiest judge to please. She had asked the culinary gurus to combine her gluten and dairy free diet to create something delicious. Thus, they had to introduce themselves to ingredients less familiar to them, such as quinoa pasta.
4.) Russell Crowe
The Australian actor turned to a gluten free diet back in 2011, when he was trying to get back into his Gladiator shape. Although, he doesn’t have a gluten intolerance he has tweeted that he had lost 16 pounds due to his new diet and exercise regime. Thus, he’s been dubbed by some as the Gluten Free Warrior ;
5.) Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth is another celebrity foodie that has decided to go gluten free as part of a healthier diet. Medical issues have encouraged the actress to go gluten and dairy free a couple years back. Inspired by her new found energy and well being, Gwyneth has written a cook book It’s All Good, which includes her favorite recipes. She also publishes recipes and health tips on her blog Goop.
6.) Sarah Jane Smith
A professional golfer, Sarah won the 2002 Australian Junior Championship and the Queensland Junior Championship. She went on to become the top ranked amateur the following year. A celiac herself, she begun experiencing abdominal pains and realized she’s inherited the same disease as her mother. She’s since became an ambassador of the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness. “It’s so important for people to understand this is something they can take control of. Celiac disease doesn’t have to control you,” she said.
7.) Bill Clinton
The former president adopted a vegan and gluten free diet after his coronary stent surgery in 2010. “‘It’s just a good thing to do, and puts so much less stress on your cardiovascular system,” he said on the Ellen DeGeneres show in May 2012. In fact gluten intolerance seems to run in the family; his daughter Chelsea who also suffers from wheat sensitivity reportedly had a beautiful gluten free cake at her wedding back in August, 2010.
8.) Sabine Lisicki
German born Sabine is another professional tennis player who has found out she has Celiac disease. For years the Wimbledon runner-up has suffered from stomach pains, nausea and poor concentration before switching to a gluten free diet. Sabine has been quoted saying: ““I had no idea what could have made me feel so weak but since I started following a gluten-free diet I have really noticed a difference in the quality of my tennis. Not only do I feel stronger and healthier, I have a lot more stamina and I am more determined than ever to play well.”
9.) Elizabeth Hasselbeck
American television co-host of the The View and a former “Survivor” is another celebrity with an aversion to gluten. Since finding out she had celiac disease, Elizabeth switched to a gluten free diet and dramatically improved her health. She’s also written a book called the “G-free diet: A Gluten Survival Guide”, which tells her story. “My hope is that in reading mine, and the pages that follow, you will be able to begin your journey to a better body and a better self—without all the heartache (and bellyache!) that I endured for far too long,” she said.
10.) Ryan Gosling
Ok, this last celebrity may not actually have a gluten intolerance nor is he a gluten free foodie (as far as we know) but he’s been helping women stay off gluten around the world – whether he likes it or not. “Gluten Free Ryan Gosling” memes have gone viral thanks to Real Food Ryan Gosling, Gluten Free Ryan Gosling, and The Liberated Kitchen, making this fellow Canadian part of the gluten free club.
